چکیده

Nominative-Genitive Conversion (NGC) in Japanese, which is also called Ga/No Conversion, is one of the most well-studied phenomena in Japanese syntax (see Harada 1971, 1976, Bedell 1972, Shibatani 1975, Nakai 1980, Saito 1983, 2004, Miyagawa 1993, to appear, Watanabe 1996, Hiraiwa 2001, 2005, and Ochi 2001, to appear, among many others). NGC is a Case alternation phenomenon in which the nominative Case marker ga on the subject DP is “converted” into the genitive Case marker no within a prenominal sentential modifier, as illustrated in (1).

Case Alternations in Potential Constructions in Japanese and their Semantic Implications

In potential constructions in Japanese, any argument of a base verb, whether it is an argument, an adjunct or even an argument with no thematic relation to the verb, can be marked with nominative case. Addressing the problem of various types of case alternations as well as `ga-no' conversion, this paper argues for the existence of some semantically motivated mechanism licensing nominative and g...

Russian Genitive Plurals are Impostors

(1) a. Inflectional paradigms aspire to “avoid homophony”. The Russian nominative singular and genitive plural endings reflect a transderivational attempt to minimize homophony across inflectional endings. b. Inflectional paradigms require transderivational reference: one cannot compute the Russian genitive plural without knowing what the nominative singular ending is. c. Markedness-based neutr...

Stacking ” and the Structural / Inherent Case Distinction

It seems to be cross-linguistically fairly common for morphology added to DPs that are already inflected for Case to interact in different ways with structural and inherent case morphology. Such morphology is often required to replace structural case morphemes, while DPs with inherent case either cannot receive the morphology at all or simply add it on top of the existing inherent case morpheme...

The focus is put on the nominative, genitive, and accusative cases for Belarusian and Russian. The paper gives a general analysis of the problem providing examples not only for Belarusian...

A configurational account of Finnish case Summary: This paper presents a configurational account of Finnishmorphological case wherein CP and vP phases serve as the local domains for case competition. I argue that, in the phasebased configurational case model, a DP with unmarked case located at the edge of phase α partakes in case competition at the next highest phase β such that it can receivem...
